Infection control watches. Myth or Reality?
We recently had a Nurse tell us that her Hospital was restricting the use of metal fob watches. This really got us thinking, where is the evidence? Are gel watches really more infection control compliant than metal ones? Yes, you can wash the gel outer casing in soap and water but do Nurses really go home after every shift and wash their watch?
We all know about the below elbows campaign. The aim of a fob watch is that you can see it in-situ and touching is kept to a minimum. The watch would rarely ever touch the patient. But do they harbour bacteria and can you effectively clean them?
We decided to commission an independent microbiological study on a range of metal, fabric, plastic and gel watches.
We used 12 different fob watches including the Daisy, the foot, the owl, the plain metal fobs and the gels. We even included the ones with fabric straps. The lab coated them with a range of micro-organisms. The key ones being - Staph Aureus, E.Coli and MRSA.
The watches were left to dry and then cleaned with alcohol Gel.
The conclusions were that all the watches appeared to be successfully cleaned using the alcohol gel. Most of the watches achieved a 97% or above reduction in organisms following cleaning.
This study has been an exciting and interesting project for us. We used quite a small number of watches for this first study and to confirm the results fully we need to do a larger study with a a bigger sample size.

VAT & Post.
All prices shown are inclusive of VAT at 17.5% (with the exception of books - there is no VAT on books)
Jo started this business because she was unable to buy a single pair of scissors without either being charged a high postage and packing fee or having place a minimum order. Postage for a single pair of scissors is now 52p and on top of this there is the cost of the bubble-wrap envelope. Up to now we have charged £2.95 postage and packing on all orders under £20 which still make a pair of scissors or a tourniquet quite expensive so we have decide to reduce our postage and packing cost to 52p for all orders under £3.75. For orders between £3.76 and £50 we will charge £2.95 and postage will be free for all orders over £50. |
