Stethoscopes
Goodies for Nurses - Stethoscopes We stock four makes/types of stethoscopes. Littmanns, Ultrascopes, an imported stethoscope and Pinard stethoscopes. To see the full range click here
The Littmann range of stethoscopes now manufactured by 3M is the best known, and seems to be the standard against which all other stethoscopes are judged. Originally designed in 1961 by Dr David Littmann because he wanted to improve on the stethoscopes which in those days had heavy cumbersome heads and two tubes, the noise of which when they rubbed together interfered with the sound from the head. His design with a single tube and a lightweight head has lead the way in the design of modern stethoscopes. The Littmann select (£29.50) is probably the best basic Nurses stethoscope and comes in four colours. Other models are illustrated in our Catalogue
The Ultrascope has only been recently introduced in this country. With its unique head design it eliminates the need for the traditional bell and provides outstanding acoustic performance without having to turn over the head. All that is required is to apply light pressure when listening for low frequency sounds and increase the pressure slightly to hear high frequency sounds. With a choice of over 60 head designs all individually crafted and 14 tube colours, (and at the moment for Goodies for Nurses customers - free engraving) it is impossible to show all the designs on this site so please use this link to Audire . They cost about £85.
Goodies for Nurses Stethoscope. A plain good quality duel-head stethoscope - and it works like all the others. We import them ourselves from Pakistan and we think that they are of better quality than those imported from China. Available in Black, Dark Blue and Red they only cost £9.99 each. This seems very cheap compared with the other stethoscopes and we sometimes wonder if we would sell more if we charged £20. You are welcome to order one and return it if you do not think it is worth the money.
Pinard stethoscope or fetoscope. We sell two versions, one made of plastic and the other turned from rosewood, costing £2,50 and £6.00 respectively, both are illustrated in our Catalogue. We tried to find out who Pinard was without much success. 3M in their History of the Stethoscopes say that the Pinard stethoscope was invented by a Pierre Adolph Piory a pupil of Dr Laennec (who originally invented the stethoscope) but on the other hand Mary Cronk writing in the Association of Radical Midwives says there was a Dr Pinard, please follow the link for her article.
